Happy Heinys Cloth Diaper Information
Warranty, Return, and Exchange
Warranty Information
The warranty for our products is as follows:
* Snaps: lifetime
* Elastic: 6 months
* Sewing: 3 months
Issues with fit, wicking, and leaking do not fall under our warranties.
Any defect will be either repaired or replaced at the discretion of Happy Heinys.
Due to the nature of cloth diapers we can not guarantee how long they will last.
Our prints are made out of a cotton outer and as with any cotton product these
will show wear with time. Just the process of
normal washing and drying will create wear on the diaper. The wear typically
does not affect the usage of the diaper or the water-proof layer of the diaper.
We do expect our product will last through
multiple children but this is not a guarantee nor a promise. It all depends on
the amount of use and the type of abuse the the diaper is given.
Most diapers are washed every other day for several months and this alone will
cause wear. We will NOT be held responsible for any wear on any of our diapers.
Wear and tear is not a defect of the products.
If there is any wear issues within the first 2 weeks of purchase than we will
repair or refund at the discretion of Happy Heiny's. Any wear after 2 weeks will
be considered due to use and washing of the
products are are not under warranty.

Diego). We do not use automated machines to produce our products. Each one is hand sewn by local moms on our machines in our
facility. Due to this there will sometimes be a defect that manages to get
through our intense quality control system and out to the public. If by some chance you receive one of our products and there happens to be a
defect please just let us know, we will take care of the situation promptly. If your item does have a defect as listed below, please send it to us. You do
not need an RMA number or permission of any kind for this. You can send the
product to:

What is a defect?
Snap defects: This would include any snap issues on any of our products. If you
ever lose a snap at any time, if the product is 1 week old or 5 yrs old, please
just simply send it in to us and we will repair the snap and send it right back to you.
Elastics: We have a 6 month guarantee on all elastics but we will also repair
all elastics for the life of the products. We have at times received some
diapers back that have been loved through many babies. Even though we love seeing our diapers used for as many babies as possible, due
to the nature of the elastics we are only to repair the elastics one time. That
being said we will do so at any time it does not matter if the diaper is 1 wk old or 5 yrs old. Simply send it in and we will
promptly repair and return the diaper to you.
Sewing: Sewing defects typically occur within the first few uses if ever. A
sewing defect will include a hole in the seam of the product or the aplix coming
up. If by some chance you receive an item that has a sewing defect please just send it into us and we will promptly repair and
return the item to you. We will repair any sewing defect or hole that may appear
on a seam of our products for the life-time of the products. We cannot however repair holes or snags that occur in any of the
fabrics due to wear and tear of the fabrics
What is not considered a defect?
Wicking and leaking are not a defect of any diaper. Most times if a diaper is
leaking or wicking the cause is due to wet inserts. Often times this can be
resolved by either changing the diaper more frequently or adding an additional insert as a booster. The other cause would be
due to sizing. You may want to try adjusting the size of the diaper. If a diaper
is too small or too big it can leak and/or wick.
Holes due to excessive use and washing. Due to the nature of some of our natural
fabrics excessive use can result in small holes of the items.
How to prevent most of these issues:- Most often elastic issues are as a result of stuffing pocket diapers
directly out of the dryer. Doing so when the diaper is still warm will result in
the elastic permanently being stretched and not bouncing back to the unstretched position. Let diapers cool completely before
folding or stuffing.
- Be gentle when opening a snap on all diapers. By "ripping" a snap product open
it can cause unnecessary stress on the snap that can lead to it pulling from the
fabric. By being gentle you are insuring the use of the snap product for many babies.
- Aplix: at Happy Heinys we have made the choice to use the highest quality hook
and loop available. We only use Aplix hook and loop, Aplix was specifically
manufactured for heavy duty and continual use. There are a couple of things that can help to prolong the life of your Aplix.
When doing laundry be sure to use the fold back laundry tabs. This will prevent
the all-annoying diaper snake. It will also prevent threads and hair from being caught in the hook portion of the tabs. If
for some reason you are not having success with the fold over diaper tabs please
view our alternative way of attaching the tabs prior to washing here. If by chance the hook portion of your diaper tabs do have
threads/hair in them you can simply clean out the tabs and they will again
function like new.
How to return an item for repair or replacement?
Please include a note with a description of the problem, your email address, and
your return address. Please only send the affected item. We do not send out
emails when an item is received. Once we receive
an item in for repair that package goes immediately up to our seamstresses where
it is promptly repaired. It is then taken back down to our shipping department
where it is sent right back out to you. We try
to make this process as quick as possible so that you are without the item for
as little time as possible.
Please send your item to:

Caring for Happy Heinys Diapers
Store wet and dirty diapers in a dry pail. Older babies? solid waste
can be removed by gently shaking the diaper over a toilet. The fleece
will release solids easily ? there is no need to rinse them before
washing.
Washing instructions for pocket diapers and trainers:
- Remove the inserts
- Cold Soak for 10-20 minutes depending on the level of dirt
- Wash on hot with slightly less than 1/4 cup of detergent
- You can add a downy ball of vinegar to the wash if the diapers have
a heavy urine scent. I recommend a downy ball because it releases the
vinegar at the right time - no need to wait by the machine.
- Rinse well to ensure all detergent is removed from diapers.
- Dry on warm. The warm of the dryer will keep your Happy Heiny
functioning like new. We personally dry our PUL products on warm and
although we have had prolonged use with these products we have not
noticed any break down of our PUL.
- DO NOT use SANITARY CYCLE. Use of the sanitary cycle can cause
melting of elastics, Aplix, snaps, and it can make the waterproof layer
no longer water proof. Use of sanitary cycle will void all warrenties.
Caring for Hemp Diapers
Your hemp product has been professionally washed and dried once. It
will need up to 8 more washings and dries before it is fully absorbent.
The first few times you wash hemp products you should NOT wash them with
fleece products. Hemp has natural oils in it and the oils can coat your
fleece. After your hemp has been fully primed you may wash it with all
of your diapering products.
Caring for Heiny Huggers
Wash new diapers before use. You may notice that they produce a bit of
lint in the beginning, this is normal for Sherpa.
- Cold rinse
- Warm-hot wash
- Same detergents as the HH
- No chlorine, no bleach, no fabric softners.
- May be dried on high heat.
Occasionally you may notice that your Sherpa diapers are not as soft
after a few months of use as they were when new. All you need to do is
rinse the diapers a few times in the washer without detergent. Add
vinegar to the rinse cycle. This will help to restore the natural
softness to the Sherpa.

Preparing to Launder Diapers
Preparing to launder diapers
Happy Heinys are made with foldover laundry tabs but did you know there's
another method to preparing your diapers for laundering? Using this method
or the foldover tabs will help keep our diapers in great shape! Shown in the
pictures above.
Caring for Stacinator Diaper Covers
Fleece & So Simple
We all know how much wetness babies produce. Fleece is 100% polyester and allows air to circulate through the cover. This reduces diaper rash caused by prolonged exposure to wetness. In addition, it is soft to the touch, dries in a flash, and can withstand laundry abuse. Caring for your fleece covers just can't be any easier:
* Machine wash in hot, cold, or warm water. * Tumble dry.
Fleece is the *wonder fabric* of the reusable diapering world. Dryer sheets can help to make it even more water resistant. I do only suggest this as a last resort though if you have some leaking. I normally wash my covers with any old load of laundry as long as it isn't really soiled and needing special attention. In a world full of *diaper washing no no's*... here is some relief. There is almost no wrong way to wash fleece.
Tip: If you suddenly find that your fleece is leaking, simply switch laundry soaps (use Dr.Bronner's for a change or even mild dish soap). This should solve the problem. If it doesn't, Nikwax products will come to the rescue.
Stretch Wool Diaper Covers
Hand wash your wool cover in cold water with like colors. Hang to dry. You may have a bit of shrinkage after the first washing. You may re-lanolize as needed. We recommend using Eucalan wool wash to care for your covers. It has natural lanolin right in the bottle. You never have to worry about when to lanolize. It is done for you each time you wash.
**Note** Dark colored wool will bleed. See the note below to fix the dyes.
*Tip* For bleeding wool:
* Mix 3 cups white vinegar with 3 Tbsp salt * Wet wool in lukewarm water * Add to vinegar/salt mixture. * Microwave for two, 3minute sessions. * Allow to COMPLETELY cool * Rinse in lukewarm water * Wash * Re-lanolize.
(if you rinse before allowing to completely cool, you may unintentionally felt your garment).
The Scoop on Detergents
You have made the choice. You have collected your diapers and now you are beginning your cloth diapering journey. You deserve to have success while cloth diapering your baby. Choosing a detergent suitable for cloth diapers can often avoid unnecessary problems including diaper odor and leakage.
What to look for in a Detergent?
At best, a detergent to be used on your baby's diapers would NOT contain enzymes, dyes, perfumes, optical brighteners or any other component designed to be left on your diapers after washing.
Specialty detergents with fabric softeners or wrinkle guards will not be suitable; however, a detergent with non-chlorine bleach or oxygen bleaching capabilities may be fine. And just to be clear, soaps are not detergents, and soaps are generally not suitable for washing diapers.
Top Mainstream Detergent Pick
The top mainstream detergent that we recommend is Tide. Over the years Tide has proven itself to be one of the most stable and readily available detergents on the market. The HE variety for HE machines has been the one detergent that our customers have not reported build up problems with.
Top Environmentally Friendly Detergent Pick
Our favorite top environmental detergent is Country Save. Country Save has no enzymes, brighteners, scents or dyes. Country Save is one of the few environmentally safe detergents that our customers have stated works wonderfully for their heavily soiled work clothes as well. Some other environmentally safe detergents that we recommend are: Allen's Naturally Powder/Liquid Standard & HE compatible, Mountain Green Free & Clear Standard & HE, Mountain Green Free & Clear Baby Standard & HE, Nellie's All Natural Laundry Soda Standard & HE, Planet Ultra Liquid, Planet Ultra Powder Standard & HE compatible and Planet 2X Ultra Standard & HE.
Detergents to avoid:
Natural soaps often contain various oils. These should NOT be used because they will leave a residue on fleece, causing it to repel liquids.
The use of any of these detergents listed below will void the warranty of our products. The use of any free and clear formulas may cause a waxy build up that will cause the diapers to repel and no longer work. We also very specifically do not recommend the use of Sportwash, Sensi-Clean, Charlie's, due to the possibility of severe burn like reactions that can happen the first time of use or months after successful use. Due to the nature of these detergents the use of them will void all warranties of the Happy Heinys products. The use of chlorine bleach will also void all warranties and can lead to the breakdown of the waterproof layer of our fabric making the diaper unusable.
Avoid: Dr. Bronner's Soap • 7th Generation • Bio-Kleen • Ivory Snow • Dreft • Charlie's • Any ALL free detergents • Sport-Wash & Sensi-Clean have the potential for detergent burn in babies.
Never use fabric softener of any kind on reusable diapers. Liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets both leave a waxy residue which causes fleece to repel urine and decreases the absorbency of other diapers.
Diaper rash creams can also cause repelling. For best results either place a small wash cloth on top of the fleece or use a liner.
Stripping DiapersBuild up refers to residue left by detergents, fabric softeners, and other substances used to clean diapers. In rare instances, baking soda will react with certain minerals in water and also cause build up. If you notice a decrease in the absorbency of your diapers, build up may be the culprit. Stripping is the process of removing residue from your diapers. To strip diapers:
* Hand wash your diaper with regular dish soap to remove any oils. * Put a small amount of dish soap on the fleece layer. * Rub vigorously or use a medium bristle scrubbing brush to scrub the fleece. * Turn the diaper inside out and repeat. * Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
You may use this method at any time you notice repelling or as a preventative measure once a week. If you are still having problems, try these special cleaning agents to strip your diapers:
* 2 scoops of Oxyclean in a very hot wash * 1 ball of RLR (found at Wal-Mart in the laundry aisle hanging on a clip) in a hot wash
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a cover with a Happy Heiny pocket diaper?
You do not need a cover with a Happy Heiny pocket diaper. You do need
one with our Happy Hempy and Heiny Huggers fitted diapers. We suggest
using Stacinator covers but any cover will work well.
Do I need to pre-wash any of the items?
Because there are several people touching our products before they
reach you, we do suggest that you prewash everything before use. The
hemp products are washed by our mill but because they contain natural
oils we suggest washing a few times prior to use. Unlike many fabrics,
hemp becomes more absorbent the more it?s washed. It takes roughly 8
washes before all of the oils are removed and the hemp is fully
absorbent. We do suggest that you wash new hemp separately until it is
fully primed. The oils can cause repelling problems with fleece products
What works better - Prints or Solids?
This really depends on your child. We suggest solid diapers for
overnight use and for longer times in between changes. The prints are
made of cotton fabric so some people may experience wicking in the legs
if the insert is fully soaked. We suggest that you use your print
diapers during the day-time and change your child every 1 1/2-2 hours.
How often do I need to change the diapers?
Cloth diapers are not like disposables. You do have to change the
diapers every 1 1/2-2 hours during the day. During the night you will
use either a night-time diaper or you will add more stuffing to your
pocket diaper.
A very important thing to remember is that your diaper is only as good
as it?s stuffing. If you only use one insert and your child is a heavy
wetter, you may need to either change more often or add additional
stuffing.
How many diapers do I need?
Your newborn will need to be changed 10-12 times a day. After about 2-3
months your baby will need to be changed 6-10 times a day. You will
want to do laundry at least every 3 days if not sooner. You may use the
above guide to determine how many diapers per size to buy. You will
need one insert for each day time diaper and 2-3 inserts for each
night-time diaper.
Do I really need to add all those extras to my laundry?
No! Please do not add anything extra to your diaper laundry unless you
need to. The simpler the better. I always just throw my diapers in the
wash, add 1/4 cup of tide, and turn it on. When they are done I throw
them in the dryer. Then take them out and stuff. The easier the better.
How can I get stains out?
The sun is the best stain remover. Take your wet diaper and hang to dry
in the sun. If the stain is stubborn squirt it with a little lemon
juice and it should come right out after drying in the sun.
What about the dryer?
Everyone has their own comments regarding whether or not to dry cloth
diapers. We recommend that you dry your pocket diapers as often as you
want to. I personally dry mine on high with every wash. Drying your
diapers in the dryer will actually help to keep them functioning
perfectly.
